2020 Website Trend Predictions

Iron Insights

2020 is just around the corner! And the new year will undoubtedly come with all sorts of new advances and upgrades in website design and development. Find out what our team at Ironistic thinks will color the digital landscape in the coming year.

Minimalism in design

Ooooh, 2020 is going to be SNAZZY! As a designer I am so excited to see trends moving toward clean, concise messages. Marie Kondo is not the only one to get organized!

You might just have to look a little harder for navigation because it might be hidden to make a site more minimalistic. At the very least, I would expect navigation to be more condensed to direct you to the most important places and then help you move on from there.

I also just can’t wait to see how background videos explode across homepages everywhere! Video is such a powerful tool, and it already ranks well with search engines so get ahead of the game and incorporate video into your website as soon as possible.

One last thing, they may not work for everyone, but 3D and animations are also the way of the future so don’t forget them in the mix, if you can work them in.

Micro-animations & organic designs

In 2020 I think we’ll see more use of micro-animations — either in the form of little animations that appear when a user hovers over an icon or button, or in the form of short animations that play on e-commerce sites that show how an article of clothing fits the model from all angles.

I think we’ll also see more uses of organic shapes, like those found in nature. Right now geometric shapes are very commonly found — sharp angles and boxes will give way to curves, giving everything a softer feel.

Minimalism will also continue to be popular, but that doesn’t mean white websites. I think we’ll start seeing more use of bold colors with clean design. It will help brands stand out from their competitors.

Clean and color

The three trends I think we’ll see most:

  1. Minimalist design. While not a new trend I think you’ll continue to see this throughout website design. However, I think some people will move away from just having lots of white space to using muted colors.
  2. Bold color. Similar to the above trend, I think you’ll see lots of clean and crisp sites that use bold color throughout the design.
  3. Organic shapes. It seems that more and more sites are using less geometric shapes and I think this will be a big trend for 2020.

Mobility, Mobility, Mobility

The mobile trend will continue in a strong way for top-notch user experience with mobile versions. More and more innovations will help make user experience as diverse on mobile as it can be on desktop. I think we will see some breakthroughs in technology that will really step up the mobile game to a whole new level!

New WordPress plugin adoptions

For 2020, I’m excited for Gutenberg to be used more across the board in WordPress. It was pushed to the main version last year and had an abysmal adoption rate. This year, I’m hoping it’s adopted more heavily and integrated into the plugins we already use.

Search-specific landing pages

2020 will force websites to be as concise as possible. Society does not have the patience, nor the time, to sift through content that does not interest them. Optimizing for search engines and creating search-specific landing pages will be a necessity to ensure satisfied users.

3D & Bold

I think we will be seeing more 3D designs in 2020 as well as bold typography. It’s easy to read and really draws attention to your brand.
